In a significant step towards strengthening India’s livestock health ecosystem, the vaccine technology for Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD), named Lumpi-ProVacInd, jointly developed by ICAR-National Research Centre on Equines and ICAR-Indian Veterinary Research Institute, has been licensed to M/s Brilliant Bio Pharma Pvt. Ltd. for commercial production, with facilitation by Agrinnovate India Ltd. The technology licensing agreement was formally signed between Dr. Raghavendra Bhatta, Director, ICAR-IVRI and DDG (Animal Science), ICAR; Dr. T. K. Bhattacharya, Director, ICAR-NRC on Equines; Mr. Biswanath Mishra, Senior Vice President (Marketing), M/s Brilliant Bio Pharma Pvt. Ltd.; and Dr. Praveen Malik, CEO, Agrinnovate India Ltd.
Lumpy Skin Disease, a highly infectious viral disease affecting cattle, has emerged as a major threat in recent years, spreading rapidly across several states in India and causing significant economic losses to farmers through sharp declines in milk production, infertility, trade restrictions, and mortality. The availability of an effective, safe, and indigenously developed vaccine such as Lumpi-ProVacInd is expected to play a crucial role in controlling outbreaks and reducing dependency on imported solutions.
The event was graced by M. L. Jat, Director General, ICAR and Chairman, Agrinnovate India Ltd., who congratulated both the ICAR institutes and the industry partner for this impactful collaboration, and also appreciated Agrinnovate India for facilitating the partnership. The event also witnessed the participation of Dr. Rajendra Kumar, Principal Scientist and In-charge ITMU, ICAR-NRC on Equines, and Mr. Dhruva V C, Business Manager, Agrinnovate India Ltd.
This technology transfer exemplifies a successful public–private partnership model, wherein cutting-edge research from national institutions is translated into scalable commercial solutions by industry partners, ensuring timely and affordable access to critical animal health interventions. The collaboration not only reinforces India’s commitment to strengthening its veterinary healthcare infrastructure but also highlights the strategic role of innovation, technology commercialization, and institutional synergy in safeguarding the livelihoods of millions of livestock-dependent farmers across the country.
