In current scenario, rice cultivation practices are progressively shifted from irrigated transplantation to direct seeded rice (DSR) which is also vulnerable to weeds problems causing significant losses. Although the use of herbicides is most effective &
Economical viable method to control the weeds. Therefore, development of herbicide-tolerant (HT) rice is essential for broadening the compatible herbicide spectrum in rice.
Keeping the above in view; ICAR-IARI, New Delhi in collaboration with other network ICAR institutes/University have developed a ‘non-GM herbicide tolerant rice genotype’ possessing tolerance to Imazethapyr 10% SL (100g a.i) by using an Ethyl Methane Sulphonate induced herbicide tolerant rice mutant (Robin), as donor parent through molecular marker assisted backcross breeding. The non-GM herbicide tolerant rice genotypes tolerant to Imazethapyr 10% SL (100g a.i.), in elite rice background, enable the transfer of HT trait into other rice proprietary/ genotypes/background of the interested industry/licensee for development of non-GM HT rice genotypes. Till now, the technology has been successfully transferred to three industries in the countries who are now successfully introgressing HT into their own background and very soon release the herbicide tolerant rice verities and make them readily available to the farmers. The technology offers huge commercial opportunities to other enthusiastic entrepreneurs who can approach Agrinnovate India for obtaining its license
