Rapid Detection Kits (CIFTest) to detect adulteration of Formaldehyde and Ammonia in fresh fish

Background:
There is a risk of economically motivated adulteration of fresh fish using formaldehyde and ammonia to enhance its shelf life which can adversely affect consumer health. Continuous monitoring of these contaminants is time-consuming and requires handling a huge quantity of toxic chemicals. The increasing consumer concern about food quality and safety issues has raised the demand for rapid, sensitive and portable screening methods. Taking these aspects into consideration, ICAR-CIFT has developed two rapid detection kits for checking the adulteration of fresh fish with formaldehyde and ammonia:
Technology details:
Rapid detection technology (CIFTest kits) can help in field-level screening of fresh fish for the presence of formaldehyde and ammonia. The advantages of the technology are as given below:
• Technology is non-destructive:
• Simple and rapid detection:
• Consumer-friendly technique of detection:
• Paper strip-based technology:
• Screening by visual observation of colour change:
• No technical know-how is required to test:
